10:30) Diseases of the Oropharynx – Philip Salen, MD 

  • Tooth Subluxation- loosening of tooth in alveolar socket
    • Treatment: stabilize tooth and refer to omfs
  • Tooth intrusion
    • Tooth forced deeper into socket
  • Tooth avulsion
    • Permanent teeth should be replaced within 30 min
  • Tooth fracture
    • If open fracture give antibiotics
  • Tongue Laceration
    • Most don’t require surgical repair
    • EXCEPTION TO RULE: lacs involving tip
  • TAKE HOME POINTS PER DR. SALEN
    • Pulp exposure in tooth fracture needs capping material
    • Tooth subluxation or avulsion consider splinting
    • Dentalgia no opioids; dental blocks and prescribe chlorhexidine mouth rinse
    • Odontogenic infections can cause parapharyngeal space infections which are a risk for bad outcome
    • All mandibular fractures are open; need antibiotics
    • Lip laceration: vermillion border is key
